Assigning Plantings in the Plantings by Location View of the Crop Plan
The Plantings by Location Crop Plan View is the workspace in Tend designed specifically for creating your field plan by assigning plantings to fields and beds. Here you can visually interact with your fields to optimize the placement and timing of each planting in your Crop Plan.
How to assign existing Plantings to Fields in this view
Step 1: Click on an existing planting in the All Unassigned Panel. Plantings automatically appear here when:
- you create new plantings and don’t assign them to a field
- you unassign a planting from a field
Step 2: Hover over any bed in a field to see where the planting will be placed
Step 3: Click a bed to assign a planting to it
NOTE: This feature does not support drag-and-drop. To assign a planting to a field, click the planting to select it, then click the bed you want to assign it to.
Modifying a planting's location assignment.
When a planting is already assigned to a bed, you can modify it as follows:
- Click on the planting in the field to open the Planting Detail Panel

Assigning Plantings to Beds from other areas of Tend
You can also assign plantings to Locations as you work in other areas of Tend by opening the Bed Selection Screen and selecting the field and/or bed where you want to assign the planting. This screen can be opened by:
- clicking on a planting to open the Planting Details screen and clicking on the Select Location option (this is also how you can assign a planting to a location right away when you add the planting to your Crop Plan)
- clicking in the Beds column in the All Plantings or Greenhouse Plantings Views of the Crop Plan Feature
- clicking on a field in the Locations Feature to open the Field Details Screen and selecting the Assign Planting option
If the planting has not yet been assigned to a field, a window will open which allows you to select the field you’d like to assign the planting to:
Once you’ve selected a field, the Bed Selection Screen will appear, and you can select which beds your planting will occupy.
Update planting details - At the top of the screen you can enter details for Total Planting Amount, In-row Spacing, Rows per bed, Field Planting Date, First Harvest Date, and Last Harvest. You can also enter this information in the main Planting Details screen.
If you’ve left the planting amount blank, you can click on beds to select one at a time, and you’ll see that the planting amount will be updated as you select each bed. If you’ve entered a planting amount, you can click on the first bed you’d like to assign the planting to and Tend will add the planting to the number of beds required to fit your planting amount.
Edit planting amount per bed - Edit the number of feet a planting should occupy in a bed by hovering over a selected bed, clicking the Edit icon, entering the number of bed feet, and clicking Save. Remove a planting from a bed by hovering over a selected bed and clicking the “X” icon on the right hand side.
Crop rotations - To help you keep track of crop rotations, Tend allows you to see what crops were previously planted in a particular bed. Just hover over a selected bed and click on the history icon.
Start over - Quickly unassign a planting from all currently selected beds by clicking the “Unassign from Selected Beds” button in the upper right-hand side of the screen.
Plant a whole field - Assign a planting to all beds in a field by clicking the “Assign to all Beds” button
Intercropping - Assign multiple plantings to a single bed to account for partial beds or intercropping. Just hover your mouse directly beneath the existing planting (displayed in gray) and click to assign the new planting to the same bed.
Unassigning and Finishing plantings - If you’d like to unassign a planting from a bed or finish the planting , you can hover over the planting (displayed in gray), click the Edit icon on the right hand side, and select either Finish Planting or Unassign from Location.
