Tend empowers management by linking field activities with your Crop Plan for a smooth, productive season. In the Tasks Feature, you manage your farm with a bird-eye-perspective of your season by creating a comprehensive Task Calendar, communicating what needs to be done, assigning responsibilities, monitoring progress, and updating your plan as circumstances change. Completed Tasks create Records and Reports, so you can analyze your operations season after season and assess which crops and activities cost you the most in time and money.
Introduction to the Tasks Feature
In the Web App Tasks Feature, you manage the season by viewing your Task Lists and Task Calendar, adding Tasks, creating and applying Task Templates, and updating your plan as progress is made and conditions change.
The Mobile App Task Feature helps you manage Tasks on the go by viewing Task Lists in the field, marking Tasks complete, recording labor time, adding Notes, and quickly creating or editing Tasks based on field observations.
Combining the Task management tools of the Web and Mobile Apps enables you to build your best practices into your plan, efficiently execute your planting plan, and make sure nothing falls through the cracks during your busy growing season. Managing Tasks in Tend
Tend streamlines management by coordinating three kinds of Tasks in the Tasks Feature: Planting Tasks, added Tasks, and Task Templates.
Execute Production Plans with Auto-Generated Planting Tasks.
Planting Tasks are the greenhouse sowing, potting up, field sowing, and transplanting Tasks for your season. These Tasks are created and added to your Task Calendar automatically based on the planting details you enter when you add a planting to your Crop Plan, so your production plan is created for you instantly, ready to be put into action.
Plans can change quickly on the farm, so we made updating Planting Tasks easy. Plantings’ key dates are linked in Tend, so if you need to push back a greenhouse sowing date, for example, then the affected plantings’ potting up, transplant, and harvest dates will update accordingly, so you stay organized no matter how crazy the season gets.
Planting Tasks scheduled for the same day are bundled into one Task List ready for you to print or take into the fields with the Mobile App. If you aren’t able to complete all of your Planting Tasks for the day, you can reschedule the unfinished planting while leaving the finished plantings on the original date for your Records.
Planting Tasks contain information such as the crop variety, planting method, planting amount, spacing, assigned locations, and any Notes associated with a planting, so you and your crew have everything you need to complete the Task successfully.
You can assign Tasks to crew members to alert them to what needs to be done and empower them with information as they manage their Tasks from the field via the Mobile App. Read on for more on crew management with Tasks in Tend.
Plan for Your Priorities by Adding Tasks.
Adding Tasks enables you to craft your plan around key activities and to manage any Tasks that spring up over the season, that you want a record of, or that you would like to assign to a crew member. You can easily reschedule, update, and delete these Tasks as circumstances change.
As you work, you and your team can log the labor time for each Task you complete. If you’ve assigned labor rates to your crew members, then Tend will not only create labor Records, but also labor Expenses associated with your Tasks. This data generates Reports to illuminate which crops and activities demand the most time and money in your system.
Optimize Operations with Task Templates.
Task Templates enable you to create linked bundles of Tasks that encapsulate your management systems. Applying Task Templates to plantings that you manage the same way helps you to build best practices into your plan and saves you the time spent entering individual Tasks.
For example, if you always follow the same schedule of cultivating, amending, irrigating, and applying row cover to your brassica plantings, then creating a Task Template for this system helps you quickly incorporate these activities into your plan.
Task Templates also help you keep your Task Calendar organized and updated over the season. You can link Task Templates to plantings’ key dates such as the greenhouse sowing or field transplant dates, so Tasks from your Template will be rescheduled automatically if you need to make a change to your planting dates.
Task Templates can be created and applied to plantings at any point in the planning process. Watch this video to learn more about creating Task Templates and putting them to work streamlining your production systems.

Task and Crew Management in the Field
Empower your team with assigned tasks in the Mobile App.
Crew members who have downloaded the Mobile App will receive a notification when a new task has been assigned to them. When they open the Task in the Mobile App, they can view details such as the Task type, Task method, any necessary implements, and the plantings and Locations associated with the Task, so they’re instantly equipped to get the job done.
In the field, your crew can manage Tasks by marking them complete, logging their labor hours, and recording field Notes. This activity in the Tend Mobile App automatically updates the Web App, so you’re always in the loop about how the day is progressing. We’ll discuss crew management with Tend further in the Mobile App chapter of the Guide.
Streamline record keeping for production insights and organized documentation.
When Tasks are assigned to and completed by crew members, Tend creates a Record of the completed task. You can use these Records to track activities related to organic certification or any other operations you want to monitor and analyze for future planning.
In Tend, Expenses and Records flow into Reports that organize your farm data into accessible packets of information to empower your decision making. Tracking farm activities by creating and completing Tasks generates data for Reports such as Labor by Task and Labor by Crop that provide insight into your operations, so you can continually learn and improve.
Take Task management offline with Printed Lists.
Tend’s Mobile App requires an internet connection or cellular data. If you don’t have cell service in your fields, you can print your Task Lists to keep your plan at your fingertips throughout the day. You can then update Tend with any completed Tasks, labor hours, changes of plan, and field Notes later in the Web App.
Organize Organic Certification: A Tasks Feature Use Case
If your farm is certified organic, efficient record keeping is a top priority. To help reduce the administrative burden of organic certification, Tend powered the Tasks Feature with robust tools for streamlining your record keeping processes.
Creating Tasks and Task Templates for the activities you need to track for organic certification helps you fold record keeping seamlessly into your day while generating a searchable Records database of your activities, so you can always find your information when you need it.
For example, if you want to track all of your fertility applications for your organic certification documentation, you can create Tasks and Task Templates for all of your spraying and amending activities.
Whenever one of these Tasks is completed, Tend automatically creates a Record of the fertility application activity that includes the date, input type, the crops and fields it was applied to, and which crew member applied the input, so you have the comprehensive Records you need without the hassle of managing printed log sheets.
